Newark, NJ — Rising New Jersey artist Mel Drugz returns with his latest single “TIME,” featuring Gwalk, a record that explores love, self-reflection, and the pressure of running out of time to make things right.
At its core, “TIME” is about love—but not in its simplest form. “On a more specific note, chasing what I thought was love, but just attachments,” Mel Drugz explains. The record pulls directly from real-life experiences, continuing his commitment to authenticity. “Every single song you hear from Mel Drugz is a real life experience,” he adds, noting that the song gave him a way to express things he couldn’t say directly at the time.
The track reflects a period marked by both emotional conflict and personal growth. Lines about turning into a man speak to a shift in mindset rooted in discipline and self-awareness. “Excluding myself from the people and things that never served me… it took some hard lessons to realize that,” he says.
“TIME” also addresses the intersection of relationships and substance reliance, a theme central to his DRUGZ CAMPAIGN mixtape. “The song comes from me venting about the two—love and drugs. Not a good mix either,” he explains. The emotions captured in the record—love, regret, and self-destruction—weren’t pre-planned, but instead came naturally during the recording process.
The collaboration with Gwalk was equally organic. What started as a moment of escape quickly turned into creation. “I dipped off to Gwalk’s crib… he brought up the idea to make a song, chose the beat, and we made the track in about 30 minutes,” Mel Drugz recalls.
Following the momentum of his single “Manifest,” which received back-to-back spins on Hot 97 via DJ Drewski, “TIME” continues in a similar emotional space. The artist acknowledges the connection directly: “It could definitely be called a continuation. It’s about the same woman.”
Despite growing visibility—including coverage from The DMV Daily—Mel Drugz remains focused on execution rather than external pressure. “Hot 97 was a sign that said ‘keep going.’ That’s the mindset—keep going,” he says.
For listeners, the intention behind “TIME” is clear. “I’d want them to feel the love,” he explains. “Because the song is about love—and I do this out of love.”
As Mel Drugz continues to build momentum, “TIME” represents both reflection and direction. “The song was about stopping the BS and standing up to get what’s yours. That’s what I’m on right now.”
