WASHINGTON, D.C. — As artificial intelligence continues to shape the way people work, communicate, and interact with technology, understanding how these systems operate—and how they can be exploited—has become increasingly important. On October 3, Respect The Tech brought that conversation to Washington, D.C., through an interactive AI Hacking Workshop designed to introduce participants to the growing field of AI red teaming.

The workshop provided attendees with an opportunity to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and technology safety through practical exercises and educational resources. Rather than simply discussing the potential risks associated with AI, participants were encouraged to engage directly with an AI system to better understand how vulnerabilities can emerge and why identifying them is essential to building safer technology.

AI red teaming is the practice of testing artificial intelligence systems from an adversarial perspective to identify weaknesses, security gaps, and unintended behaviors before they can be exploited in real-world environments. As organizations increasingly integrate AI into their products and services, professionals with the skills to evaluate these systems are becoming an important part of the conversation around responsible AI development.

A central component of the workshop was Respected Bank, a simulated banking environment developed by Respect The Tech. The fictional banking website features an intentionally vulnerable AI assistant that allows participants to experiment with different approaches to testing an AI system, identify potential vulnerabilities, and gain firsthand experience with the challenges of AI safety and security.

Through the exercise, attendees were introduced to the mindset behind AI red teaming and learned how security professionals approach systems with the goal of discovering where they may behave outside their intended parameters. The workshop also explored introductory AI attack techniques, helping participants understand how vulnerabilities can be uncovered through structured testing.

Beyond the hands-on experience, the event focused on making AI security more accessible to individuals who may be interested in technology but are still exploring how to enter the field. Attendees received information about opportunities to continue practicing their skills, along with educational resources designed to support their learning beyond the workshop.

Respect The Tech’s approach extends beyond one-time events. The organization develops its own interactive challenges and educational materials to give participants practical ways to strengthen their understanding of emerging technologies. As part of its efforts, Respect The Tech also provided attendees with e-books to support continued learning and encourage them to build on the skills introduced during the workshop.

As conversations around artificial intelligence increasingly focus on innovation, privacy, safety, and security, opportunities for community members to engage with these subjects firsthand can help bridge the gap between public interest and technical understanding. By creating an environment where participants can experiment, ask questions, and learn through experience, Respect The Tech is working to make AI safety and cybersecurity education more approachable.

The organization will continue these efforts with its upcoming Respect Week, scheduled for December 7–12, 2026. The weeklong series will provide another opportunity to bring people together around technology, education, and the responsible use of emerging innovations.

For those interested in learning more about artificial intelligence and the people working to make it safer, Respect The Tech’s programming offers a starting point for exploring a field that is becoming increasingly relevant across industries.

As AI continues to evolve, helping communities understand not only what the technology can do, but also how to identify its risks, will remain an important part of preparing for the future.
