The mainstream rap landscape is ever changing and ever evolving. Just 5 years ago, Hip-Hop was still widely seen as a male dominated genre and most if not all outlets seemed to stand firm in what was known and accepted as fact. However as we all know, times have changed and rapidly. Since 2019 there has been a bevy of female MCs from every region of the country and beyond, tackling every sub genre of rap there is, from contemporary to experimental, to down right fusions….ENTER….Miyaa V.
Hailing from The Bronx, the 18 year old is out to make a name for herself in the harsh and oftentimes unforgiving sub-genre of NY Drill. Armed with an unrepentant flow and a bravado that only NYC can provide, Miyaa is aiming to prove the naysayers wrong and show that she can indeed hang with the guys. With rapid fire lyrics and a penchant for finding pockets within the beats that up until this point many have seemed to overlook, it’s no surprise that she is quickly ascending to the top of the genre.
Songs like her most recent “Keep it P” has the late summer energy that should carry her until the fall. Whereas tracks “Don’t Lack”, “Who Did What” , “Glitch” and my personal favorite “Bronx Story” would give her a high energy set that would be sure to captivate the crowd during her performances. Gaining traction should not be a problem for Miyaa once listeners continue to tap in with her catalog. I do want to hear what more she has in store as she grows musically but I know content and subject matter comes with time and lived experiences so that’s not something I’m worried about.
In ending, Miyaa V is a rising star with tons of potential. As she continues to push her pen and find innovative ways to get her flows off, I’m expecting more people to take notice and catch up to her campaign. Once that happens and she collabs with the bigger artists in the genre and some outside of it, it will create an interesting portrait of who she is, where she is from and what her and her contemporaries in the scene truly have to offer….GO MIYAA GO!!!
